Sometimes in life, you find yourself on a path and you wonder whether you took it because you truly wanted to or because you were trying to fit in with other people and fulfill someone else’s dream. Perhaps you started your career because your parents wanted you to pursue it or you wanted to impress someone. If you have found yourself in this position, or you just need a new sense of direction, then here are some ideal places to look.

Paris was once the city of artists. Living on not much food and a lot of wine, in romantic attic flats. It is a wonderful history to live in the midst of but Paris has changed a lot since the days of the Moulin Rouge. Paris is high tech, a high-speed city with a population from all over the world with a variety of prestigious universities and scientific institutes.

It has gone from a purely cultural capital to forge, where you can form yourself into the person and professional you would like to be. Eat dinner in the Latin quarter and walk up to the cathedral in Montmarte to get your brain working. There is nowhere better in the world to see clearly than the top of the hill next to St Germain des Pres.

If you prefer a more sedate pace but enjoy French culture and language, then put Avignon on your list. It is a smaller city but it has a pedigree. As the former papal capital, it has beautiful architecture, an ancient higher education tradition, and the famous scenic bridge. The beautiful old town is full of life, especially in the summer when it hosts an arts festival. If you think best about who you are and who you would like to be amongst space and creativity then taking your next step in the direction of Avignon is the right choice.

Last but not least, think about Tallin, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most digitally connected cities in the world all at once. Tallinn feels full of energy, even in the beautiful old town, it is noticeable that the population is young and vibrant. You will even see school children wandering back and forth at the beginning and end of their day. Just across from Helsinki, you can live in the perfect cross between looking to the future and appreciating the best of the past.

Tallinn gives you access to every possible identity you could want to try on for size. You could opt for a glass high rise apartment or a part of the old world. Visit vegan restaurants or sit down to a medieval banquet. The subtle atmosphere of productivity and polite residents are the perfect springboards for your future.

Nobody can sort out your priorities for you, but the right environment can help clear your mind and sharpen your perspective.
